Summary:
Abstract
This paper’s aim is to conduct a comparative analysis of the films Metropolis by Fritz Lang (1927), Ex Machina by Alex Garland (2014), Her by Spike Jonze (2013), and the episode titled White Christmas (2014) from the science fiction series Black Mirror. The analysis will focus on how the aforementioned works present the influence of advanced technology on power relations within the dystopian societies depicted, as well as will attempt to trace the ways in which the transition from mechanical to cybernetic governance appears to affect the natural/artificial, original/copy dichotomies, and their interrelations.
The analysis of the above works will be carried out through the prism of Donna Haraway's theories on cyber-human identity and Shoshana Zuboff's theories on surveillance capitalism, which highlight the socio-economic consequences of advanced technology. The methodology extends to other important approaches, such as Michel Foucault's theories of surveillance and discipline and Theodor W. Adorno's critical examination on cultural industries. With this combination of theoretical approaches, this analysis aims to explore the complexity of power relations and the impact of technological progress within the works presented.
