Cardiotoxicity of anti-cancer drugs
Summary:
With the increasing incidence of cancer, particularly in elderly populations prone to cardiovascular problems, the importance of managing cardiotoxicity from anti-cancer drugs becomes apparent. This paper synthesizes the findings from current research on cardiotoxicity, focusing on heart failure, hypertension and thrombosis, commonly associated with anticancer agents such as anthracyclines, HER2, VEGF, tyrosine kinase and BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Particular emphasis is given on strategies for monitoring and managing cardiovascular adverse events, including management protocols (where available) and lifestyle interventions. In addition, understanding the mechanism of the pathways underlying cardiotoxicity informs preventive measures and therapeutic approaches for this and thus particular emphasis is given.
