Investigating the frequency of types and management of nursing errors in intensive care units
Summary:
Introduction: Medication errors in critical care are frequent, serious and predictable. Critically ill patients are prescribed twice as many medications as patients outside the ICU, and almost all will suffer a potentially life-threatening error at some point during their hospitalization.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency and types of nursing errors and their management in adult, paediatric and neonatal intensive care units.

Materials and Methods: the study was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. As a research tool, the questionnaire of Dr. Karga Maria was used, which was completed by 68 nurses of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the University General Hospital of Heraklion and the General Venizelion Hospital. The data analysis was performed using the statistical software SPSS 25.0. Frequency distributions and measures of central tendency/dispersion of the descriptive characteristics of the nurses in the study, as well as their work and errors, were calculated. The chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis methods were used to correlate nursing errors with the basic characteristics of the 68 nurses. The accepted level of significance was set at 0.05.

Results: In this study the majority of the sample was female, Technological Education. Α high frequency of occurrence of nursing errors was assessed in the study sample as 8 out of 10 (80.9%) reported to have made a relevant error. In terms of frequency, about half (45.6%) reported 1-5 errors and 14.7% reported >10 errors.

Conclusion: The most common errors made by nurses are administering the wrong medication and administering medication with the wrong dosage. Also, the frequency of errors was not significantly related to their specific characteristics, their education or those of their work and work environment (p>0.05).
