Summary:
The subject of this thesis is the study of the effect of air pollution on human health. Under this prism, the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) was carried out in biological fluids, specifically in urine, blood serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). The specific samples were collected by specialized staff of the Athens general hospital "SOTIRIA". Biological samples come from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or lung cancer. For the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) the technique of Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry was used, while the development and validation of the method for the determination of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) was performed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer with a time-of-flight analyzer. Afterwards, the processing of the results and the study of variations was performed. Finally, the results were discussed and compared based on demographic characteristics provided by donors during sample collection.
