The reception of theocritian and ovidian poetry in Angelo Poliziano's Stanze per la giostra: The myth of Polyphemus and Galatea
Summary:
After an overview of Angelo Poliziano's life, work and sources of influence, the study focuses on the poet's magnum opus, the Stanze per la giostra, first attempting an introductory summary of the main elements of the work, while emphasis is placed on the passage that this paper argues shows an extensive influence from ancient Greek and Latin sources, which is the description of the kingdom of Aphrodite (stanzas 70-120). The paper concludes by highlighting and analyzing specifically the theocritan and ovidian influences in Poliziano's entire poetic composition, and especially in the aforementioned passage, to the last stanzas of which a significant part of the analysis is devoted in the light of the examination of the theocritan and ovidian influences that the Italian poet creatively exploited in order to construct his own version of the myth known from antiquity about the love of Cyclops Polyphemus for the nymph Galatea.
