Synthesis, characterization and investigation of the photocatalytic behavior of nickel, diselenolene complexes for hydrogen evolution reaction
Summary:
This study was conducted in the Inorganic Chemistry laboratory of the National and
Kapodistrian University of Athens. It focuses on the synthesis, characterization and
investigation of the photocatalytic behavior of two nickel complexes with diselenolenic
ligands. Various spectroscopic methods such as UV-vis, IR, and p-XRD were employed
for the complete characterization of the two compounds. Gas chromatography was
utilized to study the catalytic action of the complexes in both heterogeneous and
homogeneous photocatalysis systems. The objective was to compare the performance
of the two catalysts as well as the individual photocatalytic systems in terms of hydrogen
production from water splitting. Each system consisted of one of the complexes complex
as a catalyst, a photosensitizer (either fluorescein or CdTe quantum dots), an electron
donor (either triethylamine TEOA or ascorbic acid AscOH) and a solvent (either water or
an organic solvent/water mixture as DMSO:H2O or DMF:H2O).
