Income inequality, economic growth and financial integration
Summary:
This thesis consists of 9 chapters and examines how economic inequality is created and its relationship with economic growth in the contemporary integrated economic environment, as shaped in recent years. The primary aim of the thesis is to understand the channels and ways through which economic inequality is linked to economic growth through economic activity, as shaped in the years of globalization, rapid technological development, intense internationalization of markets, and fundamental changes resulting from the massive growth of the financial sector. Additionally, the thesis aims to provide theoretical and empirical evidence needed to formulate policies that promote economic growth without exacerbating economic inequality. In the initial chapters, the relationship between economic inequality and economic activity is presented based on relevant literature. The second chapter defines economic inequality and how it is formed through the distribution of income from the final product according to different theoretical approaches. It is highlighted that economic inequality can result from both unequal distribution among production factors and unequal distribution among individuals whose income comes from the same production factor. Subsequently, the third and fourth chapters present the channels through which economic inequality is related to economic growth, according to the relevant literature. Specifically, the third chapter introduces Kuznets' hypothesis and some socio-political and fiscal channels indicating relationships between inequality and growth. In the fourth chapter, the way global economic integration in recent decades, particularly rapid technological advancement, globalization of markets and trade, and the growth of the financial sector, has shaped the relationship between economic inequality and economic growth. The fifth chapter develops a theoretical model based on the Lorenz curve and Gini index, describing levels of economic inequality in relation to income distribution. In the following chapters, using theoretical models and assumptions derived from Chapter 5 and the literature, the econometric relationship between economic inequality and economic growth in the integrated Eurozone is examined. Finally, a discussion is presented on the empirical results in relation to theoretical assumptions, as well as on the economic policy of the Eurozone regarding inequality and the path of economic growth chosen according to the literature and empirical results. The contribution of the thesis lies in the extensive and analytical literature review on economic inequality, how it is created, and its connection to economic growth and other economic activities. The theoretical framework and conclusions drawn from it contribute to the understanding of levels and growth of inequality concerning income distribution. The empirical results contribute to the discussion on inequality levels in the Eurozone in relation to the economic policies followed.
