The body in "Leucippe and Clitophon" by Achilles Tatius
Summary:
The aim of this thesis is to examine the body and its different aspects in the ancient Greek novel, specifically in the novel, Leucippe and Cleitophon, by Achilles Tatius. The body is presented in the novel from different perspectives, as an object of desire and eroticism, following the heterosexual novel convention. The novel emphasizes mostly in the female body, which is depicted suffering, violated and enslaved, even being cannibalized. My perspective is that the violence of the body is gendered and highlights the male anxiety for domination and body integrity. Therefore, the body becomes a locus of identity negotiation for the heroes, who struggle to preserve their body from the domination by other’s and in this way guard their identity until the end.
