A scoping review about the impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on paediatric populations worldwide
Summary:
Τhe term Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) compromises a group of about 20 various, mainly communicable medical conditions whose incidence is much higher in low- and middle income countries (LMICs) and they affect disproportionately children and women. NTDs have been associated with various negative effects on children’s health, development and behavior as well as on their social and financial status. These consequences can also be a result of the absence of pediatric populations in clinical trials about medications efficacy and safety, so as neither already approved drugs can be licensed to children nor appropriate formulations for pediatric use can be designed and produced. Although this condition has already been recognized by a plenty of international organizations and several policies have been recommended, this review aims to highlight, that the limitation of the burden of NTDs requires a targeted approach with regard to the special characteristics of each NTD. The PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist was used so as a systemic approach to this topic can be ensured.
