Surgical treatment of patients with sleep apnea
Summary:
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA ) is described as repeated episodes of apnea and hypopnea during sleep ,leading to hypercapnia ,repeated oxygen desaturations and awakenings . It contributes to the appearance and worsening of metabolic ,heart , vascular ,neoplastic and neurologic disease ,while the consequences of OSA can be significant regarding productivity ,loss of employment ,public security and relevant health costs.
Treatment of choice for sleep apnea is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), with excellent therapeutic results .However patient compliance is less than optimal and many patients seek OSA treatment with surgery that can offer relief of symptoms with minimal complications. A number of surgical treatments have been reported for OSA treatment ,each one being appropriate for a specific patient group ,treatment results vary and possible complications are different for each one of them .
Object of this study is to describe different surgical techniques , report therapeutic results and possible complications.
