The effect of gender, age and educational level on the Corsi Block Test
Summary:
The Corsi Block Test is a non-verbal test measuring the range of visuospatial short-term and active memory that is widely used in clinical and research contexts. The first aim of the present study is to generate normative data for this instrument in a Greek, healthy population. In addition, the present study compares the performance of the Corsi Block Test with the verbal Digit Span in both conditions of the tools - straight and reverse recall. This comparison aims to investigate whether a common mnemonic mechanism is used for verbal and visuospatial functions, an investigation that is the second aim of the present study. To answer these research questions, data were collected from 311 subjects, 134 females and 177 males, aged 18 to 88 years and educational level 0 to 24 years of formal education. Statistical analysis of the data showed that males performed better on the Corsi than females, younger adults performed better than older adults, and higher educated adults performed better than those with a lower level of education. Also, higher performance was found on the visual-spatial test of the Corsi Block Test compared to the verbal test of the Digit Span, as well as higher performance in the reverse recall condition compared to straight recall in both tests.
