Informing smokers patients with Diabetes Mellitus as means for the treatment of periodontitis
Summary:
Periodontitis, diabetes mellitus and smoking are non-communicable diseases that have serious consequences not only on people's health but also on the global economy. The therapeutic means and methods needed to treat these diseases directly affect the economy, while the negative effects they have on people's health have an indirect affect on it. Epidemiological data show that all three diseases concern a large percentage of the world's population, reaching epidemic levels. Moreover, the two-way relationship between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus and the negative effect that smoking has on the former are widely known and have been of concern to the scientific community for several years. The greatest role in reducing the likelihood of developing all three diseases is played by valid prevention, which in the largest percentage includes informing patients about the negative effects of diseases and activating them, for the adoption of a healthier lifestyle that includes proper nutrition, exercise, frequent medical and dental check-ups and the practice of proper and daily oral hygiene.
The great need for prevention of all three diseases as well as the importance of people informing in it, led to this study. Its purpose is to determine the degree of awareness of smoking patients with diabetes mellitus about their serious effects on periodontal disease and to achieve this purpose, questionnaires were created and distributed in private dental and pathological clinics in the prefecture of Attica.
