Paediatric osteoporosis and orthodontics
Summary:
Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic disorder of the skeleton, characterized by low bone mass and abnormal bone microarchitecture, resulting in increased bone fragility and low-energy fractures. Paediatric osteoporosis can be either primary, due to genetic factors, or secondary because of other, chronic diseases and/or their treatment. Oral health and proper occlusion are very important parts of overall health, as they affect both functionality and facial aesthetics of the individual. In particular, a severe malocclusion may affect speech, mastication (therefore nutrition, which is of fundamental importance, especially in childhood), appearance, as well as a child's psychological condition and social behaviour.
The purpose of this study is to collect the available data from the literature, regarding orthodontics, in paediatric cases of osteoporosis, by using the "PubMed" database. Applied filters for literature search were studies on humans, aged between 3 and 18 years, written in English language and published in the last 20 years. The results of this search show that children with osteoporosis have severe dental and occlusal problems. There seem to be several limitations and risks in the orthodontic approach of these patients and treatment can be a challenge for the orthodontist. The research on this field is ongoing and challenging, given the rarity of paediatric osteoporosis.
