Risk factors associated with Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy (PVR). A literature review
Summary:
Purpose: To present the risk factors associated with Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy (PVR) after retinal detachment surgery repair.
Methods: The PubMed platform was used to retrieve articles relevant to the research question regarding risk factors for PVR after retinal detachment surgery that have been published during the last thirty years.
Results: In total, 13 studies were included in this review. From the risk factors that have been studied, a positive relation between them and the development of PVR after retinal detachment repair was found for advanced age and smoking, pre-operative PVR, aphakia/pseudophakia, intravitreal hemorrhage, macular detachment, the extension of the retinal detachment and the duration of associated symptoms.
Conclusion: The identification of the risk factors that are positively associated with PVR after retinal detachment repair is very important and can contribute to early diagnosis and treatment of PVR but also to its prevention.
