Interventions of preventing occupational accidents in immigrants: a systematic literature review
Summary:
Introduction: Immigrants are more likely to suffer an occupational injury than native workers.
Purpose: To investigate the existence of preventive occupational accident programs for immigrants as well as to assess their effectiveness.
Methodology: A systematic literature review was carried out in the PubMed and Scopus databases in Greek and English language for immigrants aged 18-65 years. The used keywords were: (immigrants OR migrants OR refugees OR emigrants) AND (work OR occupational OR worker*) AND (accident OR injury OR injuries) AND (education OR intervention).
Results: Of a total of 1,400 articles retrieved from both databases, 28 research studies met the inclusion criteria of which 9 are quantitative, 10 are qualitative and 9 studies had both quantitative and qualitative data. The origin of the articles was mainly from the USA and secondarily from Asia and the UK.
Conclusions: From the review it appears that although the majority of migrant workers were not trained by employers in occupational health and safety, after the training interventions were carried out an increase in the recognition of occupational hazards and high-risk tasks was observed. Also, with increased knowledge of labor rights, workers were able to refuse hazardous work and demand protective equipment to perform their work.
