From the patriarchal view of gender to femicides: The greek example through an original play
Summary:
This paper falls within the field of creative writing and was carried out within the framework of the master’s degree program of the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It examines the role of patriarchy in shaping our perception of gender and in perpetuating violence against women and femicides. Despite greek society’s gradual awakening to gender-based violence, femicides and violence against women persist having become an integral part of our daily life specifically after the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).
The paper’s research serves as the base for the construction of the original play and the creation of the characters. The play is focused on the gender agreement and particularly violence against women highlighting the role of gender stereotypes and ideologies in perpetuating violence in Greece. Through both the research and the play it becomes clear that femicides is the result of normalizing violence against women. Patriarchy in conjuction with other ideologies and beliefs, such as racism, normalizes prejudice, discrimination, inequality and violence.
