Summary:
This thesis deals with the analysis of broadband services and their future development in the Western Balkans region and more specifically in Albania and Montenegro. Firstly, the intervention framework of telecommunication infrastructure investments in the two countries, the role of the European Union in the financing and development of major telecommunication network projects was studied and then all the critical elements for the development of broadband in Albania and Montenegro were analysed. In particular, the fixed and mobile telephony markets, the services provided in these markets, the technologies used, the access speeds and the pricing packages are illustrated. It also examined the context and the state of common infrastructure available per country to leverage future investments as well as the upcoming changes in each market, based on the European Union strategy affecting each country as a candidate member state. Finally, the conclusions of the market analysis of each country, the new digital transformation services benefiting from high-speed broadband services and the critical factors expected to influence the demand for each service in urban, semi-urban and rural areas are presented.
