Sound spatialities and the politics of the Ottoman monumental heritage of Athens
Summary:
This paper focuses on the analysis of the new sensory regime that is formed around Ottoman monuments. Sound ethnography serves as the primary research tool, highlighting the significance of sound not only as a physical phenomenon but also as a fundamental element of cultural experience.

The study examines how the sensory choices of the relevant authorities shape the visitors' experiences and reflect political attitudes toward the Ottoman monuments.
This research analyzes four Ottoman monuments: the Tzistarakis Mosque, the Fethiye Mosque, the Bath of the Winds, and the Benizelos Mansion. Through sound ethnography, an effort is made to understand how the sensory mechanisms activated by the curation of these spaces affect their overall experience and interpretation.

The study aims to highlight the ideological and social views that shape the way Ottoman monuments are integrated into or rejected from Greek cultural heritage. The change in the sensory presence of these monuments allows for the creation of new narratives, which are crucial for understanding their management and role in the cultural identity of Greece.

The analysis of sound and auditory experience provides deeper interpretations of the political attitudes and social impacts associated with the cultural heritage of Ottoman monuments, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of their role in contemporary society.
