Andean Music: Issues of Identity in the Region of Cusco, Peru
Summary:
The thesis is an ethnography, product of month-long field research in Peru. Basic ethnographic tools were semi-structured interview and participant observation, and the ethnographic material that emerged and was analyzed afterwards consists of field interviews and recordings, photographs and videos. The goal of the thesis is to outline the relationship between andean identity and andean music of the region, to present the way in which these two are intertwined.
Through the collection and analysis of ethnographic material and bibliography it is presented, with an interpretive anthropological perspective, what Andean music is and how it relates to Andean identity today. More specifically, it is argued that the Andean music of the andean communities differs from the "Andean music" as it is presented through the World Music movement and the identification of specific musical genres and styles with separate ethnic groups in the context of folk festivals is shown. Also, the existence of many local andean music styles is highlighted and their identification with local musical identities, which prevail over a generalized andean or Peruvian identity, that however comes to the fore in the case of placing andean against a foreign culture, such as Western music culture. Lastly, part of the work is devoted to the self-identification of the research subjects as Andinos and not indigenous.
