Original Title:
Συσχέτιση της διαταραχής ψυχογενούς ανορεξίας και του συνδρόμου Asperger ως προς την ενσυναίσθηση (empathy)
Translated title:
Correlation between anorexia nervosa and Asperger's Syndrome towards empathy
Summary:
Clinical experience reveals that eating disorders often co-exist with autism spectrum disorders. Interestingly, the most frequent comorbidity is found between Anorexia Nervosa and Asperger's syndrome. A growing literature often highlights that a closer examination of emotion and especially the concept of empathy between the two disorders reveals a strong association of shared patterns. The present cross- sectional study, evaluates whether patients with Anorexia Nervosa score lower in terms of empathy ability compared to patients with Bulimia Disorder. A total of 30 participants who met DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for AN and 28 participants who were diagnosed with BN were evaluated. Findings regarding empathic ability, which was expected to be lower in patients with AN compared to patients with BN, were inconsistent. The main research hypothesis of whether and to what extent individuals diagnosed with AN and BN differ in terms of empathy was not confirmed. It was also found that BMI, residence, hospitalization, and medication were not predictors of sociocognitive deficits and behavioral patterns. The complex nature of Eating Disorders creates the need for further evaluation through additional research, in order to deal effectively with feeding difficulties.
