Aspects of the Semantics of Negation in German
Summary:
This study presents aspects of the semantics of negation, focusing on negative nominal expressions in the German language. The theoretical starting point of this thesis is the phenomena of "Double Negation" and "Negative Concord." The central question of the thesis is whether n-words should be treated as negative quantifiers or as negative polarity items (NPIs). Throughout the discussion, different interpretations of sentences are examined, as they are semantically influenced by the terms contained within the sentence and their interactions. In this context, phenomena such as negative and positive polarity items (NPIs, PPIs), lexical decomposition, and coherent and incoherent constructions in negation are examined.
