The thesis deals with the institution of prisoners' permits in the prison system, with emphasis on the comparative review of the legal framework in Greece and abroad. The thesis analyses the historical development of the institution, the legal basis and the purposes served by the permits, such as social reintegration and the improvement of the correctional function. Finally, national frameworks in countries such as Germany, the UK, Sweden and the USA are compared, with particular emphasis on regular, exceptional and educational leaves.
