Study of the ichthyoplankton composition in the sea current of the Euripus strait
Summary:
This study presents the qualitative and quantitative constitution of ichthyoplankton in the current of Euripus strait, Chalcis, Euboea from May to October 2022. The samples were collected with a surface plankton net with mesh size 250μm. The samplings were carried out in a monthly basis from a stable point, with different directions and velocities of the current (stream?). In total were identified 28 taxa of eggs and larvae which belong to 17 families. 10 taxa of eggs belong to 8 families and 18 taxa of larvae belong to 12 families. The most abundant taxa of eggs that were accounted and identified, were from the Mugilidae (Grey Mullets) family, the Callionymus (Dragonets) genus and the species Solea aegyptiaca (Chabanaud, 1927) (Egyptian sole). The most abundant taxa of larvae that were accounted and identified, were from the Blenniidae (Wrasses), Gobiidae (Gobies) and Sparidae (Porgies) families. From the analysis was noted that most of the abundances of eggs and larvae have been observed in the North to South current. Alongside the study on ichthyolpankton, were observed the heavily densed presence of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi (Agassiz, 1865) in the samples from early summer. Most of its abundances were recorded in the South to North current. At last, this study is ascertaining just how significant is the contribution of this bidirectional current in the reproductive behavior and the dispersion of the eggs and larvae of the north and south Euboean gulfs’ fish.
