Summary:
Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the levels of Good Governance of Sports Federations in Greece, through the case of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (HBF), which had launched an initial effort investigating their Good Governance levels back in 2020. This study measures the same dimensions and indicators in 2024 and compares the two studies to test whether there are any significant changes in the four-year period 2020-2024.
Methodology: To fulfil research goals, the method of Content Analysis was used, while the main sources of data collection were the official website of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, as well as the official reports, surveys and reports of the National Sports Governance Observatory (PEAD). Additionally, scientific journals and articles were reviewed on the subject.
Results: The data analysis showed that Good Governance in the HBF today is at a medium level (only 151 out 274 indicators were met, 55.1%), especially in Transparency, Accountability and Democratic Processes, while Social Responsibility is at a better level. Compared to 2020 (60 out of 274 indicators were met, 21.9%), positive changes have taken place in almost all dimensions, which show a clear picture of improvement. However, there should be further improvement, especially in Transparency and Democratic Procedures, which in total each meet 35% of the measured indicators, being labeled "Weak", while Accountability (53.9%), was at a "Medium" level. In contrast, Social Responsibility meets 77.3% of the indicators measured and labeled as "Good".
