The particularities in the management of genetic material for research purposes within the framework of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The purpose of this work is to explore the management of genetic material for research purposes, focusing on both specificities and general practices and challenges within the framework of data protection regulations. Recent advances in bioinformatics and genomics have led to the generation of large amounts of genomic data in research and clinical settings. Genetic data contain information about data subjects as well as their blood relatives, thus highlighting the importance of adopting appropriate privacy protection measures when processing genomic data. In this context, the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union underlines the necessity of pseudonymization, and analyzes the general principles of data protection: transparency, fairness, legality, data minimization, purpose limitation, accuracy, confidentiality, integrity and storage limitations. In conclusion, scientists are called upon to address the privacy issues of genomic data in order to ensure responsible research.
