Inscribed funerary stelae from the Piraeus cemetery found next to the Eetioneia Gate
Summary:
The aim of the present thesis is the archaeological and epigraphic study of the funerary stelae that have been discovered in the ancient cemetery located outside the Eetioneia Gate. Eleven unpublished funerary steles, which came to light during excavations prompted by recent works carried out in the context of the project 'Reconstruction of the park in the Kastraki area of the Municipality of Keratsini-Drapetsona,' and which are stored in the warehouses of the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, will be studied on-site. At the same time, the published material from the 2008 works will be examined, and the possibility of the existence of additional inscriptions, either from isolated rescue excavations or from inscriptions found in secondary use, will also be investigated. Furthermore, the historical and archaeological data from the area where these inscriptions were found will be studied through the literature, in order to present the historical development of the area in which this ancient cemetery was located, from which the findings emerged.
