Epiphanios-Stephanos Dimitriadis (1760-1825), his life and work
Summary:
The dissertation focuses on the life and work of Epiphanios or Stephanos Dimitriadis (1760-1825). Through the collection and synthesis of the available documents, an attempt is made to compose a more complete, if possible, prosopography. Along with the more or less known and published works of Dimitriadis, a series of manuscripts of varying content are examined, most of which contain his autograph texts. These are found in Athenian libraries (Sp. Lampros' former private collection of manuscripts, now in the collection of the Library of the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens), in Skiathos (Archive of the Monastery of Evangelismos), as well as in Athonite monasteries (Monastery of St. Paul and Monastery of Panteleimon). These abundant findings are used to reconstruct the personal journey of the scholar in space and time, while particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of his various literary writings. The research is accompanied by the annotated literary edition of hitherto unknown documents, especially the three literary texts that we identify in Dimitriadis' remains. These are a prosaic fictional narrative, the "Natural and Moral History of Man" (ca. 1802-1810), and two dramatic or theatrical texts, the "Dialogue of Olympiad and Diogenes" and the "Comedy of Epimetheus and Pandora" (2nd decade of the 19th century).
