Homoerotic aspects and masculinity in Greek literary texts of the first half of the 20th century: The paradigm of N. Lapathiotis and N. Kazantzakis
Summary:
The aim of this thesis is to trace the way in which male homoerotic desire is associated with masculinity in Greek prose texts of the first half of the 20th century. Although a general outline of the period according to the subject is given, in both the literary and scientific fields, we will focus on the example of the two Greek writers Napoleon Lapathiotis (1888-1944) and Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) and specifically on their works Το τάμα της Ανθούλας (The Vow of Anthoula) (1931-1932) and Κούρος ή Θησέας (Kouros or Theseus) (1949), which we will comment on in the light of the interpretative prism of the relationship between homoeroticism and masculinity. Seeking an interdisciplinary approach in our study, we will refer to theoretical and scientific perspectives on concepts related to sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as to the attempts of defining and schematizing them. Furthermore, we will highlight the relationship between the texts under examination (and, more generally, the (re)representation of homoerotic desire in modern Greek texts) and the ancient Greek past. Through the textual examples of Plato, Plutarch, Aeschines (but also others) and the views of scholars on the subject of homoeroticism in Greek antiquity, we will trace the degree of survival of the ancient Greek perceptions and ideologies on (homo)sexuality and masculinity in modern Greek literature.
