Maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and conduct problems (CD and ODD)
Summary:
AIMS: Several studies have indicated an association between alcohol use during pregnancy and offspring externalizing disorders (Conduct Disorder and Oppositional defiant disorder); however, it is uncertain whether this relationship is causal. We conducted a systematic review to determine if the literature supports a causal role of maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring externalizing disorders diagnosis.
METHODS: The search waw conducted in Pubmed database and 6 studies were included. Every study that invested maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and CD and/or ODD, was included. Studies in non‐English language, comorbid Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) were excluded. Participants in the included studies were mothers and their offspring.
RESULTS: We included 6 studies, 2 of which investigated smoking and CD, 1 alcohol use and ODD and 3 alcohol use and both CD and ODD. 8 from 14 studies supported an association between MSDP and CD. Studies on ODD in all the outcomes reported inconsistent findings and no strong conclusions on causality can be made.

CONCLUSIONS: There appears to be no clear evidence to support a causal relationship between maternal prenatal drinking and Conduct Disorder and/or . Oppositional Defiant Disorder More genetically sensitive designs are considered necessary in the future
