Crisis management and European humanitarian interventions and civil protection: the case of rescEU
Summary:
This paper is a literature review and deals with the evolution of Civil Protection in the European Union and its interventions in crisis and disaster management. Nowadays natural and man-made disasters, which are increasing worldwide, threaten human lives, fauna and flora with huge socio-economic consequences. Over the years, the European Union has recognised the risk of these disasters and established actions in the fields of prevention, preparedness, risk management and disaster response. In 2001, the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism was established and utilizes various tools, to coordinate cooperation between the participating States in response to a crisis. In particular, with the development of rescEU, the EU has aimed at faster and more effective crisis management and response to the hundreds of requests it receives and some of the most important events are the health crisis during the Covid-19 pandemic, forest fires in European countries and the humanitarian crisis in the war in Ukraine.
