Managing global health crises: A comparison of spanish flu, avian Influenza & COVID-19 and the role of the World Health Organization
Summary:
A pandemic is an epidemic of infectious illnesses that spreads quickly over a sizable area (continent) or on a worldwide scale and poses a threat to practically the entire population. The word pandemic is derived from the greek words pan (all) and demos (people). A disease with an epidemic incidence that has a consistent incidence over time is not regarded as a pandemic. Additionally, influenza pandemics and re-emerging seasonal influenza should not be confused with one another (Alcoforado 2020). Smallpox (1896), tuberculosis (1850), and the plague are only a few of the pandemics that have been recorded throughout history (1817). A few recent pandemics are the HIV5 pandemic (1980), the Spanish flu epidemic (1918), the flu pandemic of 2009, and the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) (Alcoforado 2020). The purpose of this essay is to examine the Spanish flu, avian influenza, and the Covid-19 pandemic in light of the handling of international health emergencies and the function of the WHO.
