Study and historical review of folk-traditional medicine and medical sophies in Greece
Summary:
The present study is a review of the factors that led to the development of folk medicine in Greece, from antiquity to the present day. Its effect on the various traditional societies of the previous decades is analyzed, but also on how the practical methods affected the culture, habits and in general the culture of our country. Starting from the historical elements of the past and their survival through a set of traditions, the history and folklore of our country was enriched with traditional medicine practices. Also, through the testimonies of various people, we are transported to earlier times and to various regions of Greece, to realize in the end, how the development of medical science may have made leaps and developed to a very large extent, some practical methods, however, such as medical sophies or chiropractics, have remained until today, confirming the two-way relationship between popular and scientific medicine. Finally, reference is made to the influence of healing herbs, folk healers and traditional medicine in general, and how poets and writers included in their works the influence and habits of all these in traditional society, during the ancient, Byzantine and more recent years.
