Transgenerational trauma and development of psychotic and affective disorders on the offsprings: A Systematic Review
Summary:
A lot of people, worldwide, suffer from psychotic and affective disorders. Specifically, both schizophrenia and depression are complex and multifactorial diseases, which affect patients’ daily functionality and very often there is no remission, despite being given proper treatment. Their etiology is not clear yet, but risk factors, such as personal trauma, have been described that can affect their presence. Transgenerational trauma consists of the transmission of adverse experiences from one generation to the next, and may influence the mental health of the offsprings. There are some reviews that study the emergence of anxiety disorders to the offsprings, but there aren’t any for psychotic or affective disorders. This systematic review checked the current literature as of July 2024 for a correlation between transgenerational trauma and psychotic and affective disorders, following the PRISMA criteria. The initial search provided us with 361 articles and in the end eight studies were included. One of the studies proved correlation between offsprings’ psychotic symptoms and transgenerational trauma and in 5 of them there were more offsprings’ depressive symptoms, when there was transgenerational trauma. In 2 of the studies there was no differentiation. This review provides with indication that there is a correlation between offsprings’ depressive and psychotic symptoms and transgenerational trauma and emphasizes the need for further study of this subject, in order to prevent both incidence of these disorders and the effects of transgenerational trauma.
