Neo-Orientalism and Rebetiko in the contemporary Jazz music scene
Summary:
In this thesis, an attempt is made to investigate the trend of Neo-Orientalism in the contemporary Jazz music scene by analyzing its individual characteristics, its historical and cultural context and how the music of the East and specifically rebetiko influenced this particular genre. We also analyze the similarities and differences of these two different musical genres and propose some future directions for the creation of a new genre through the combination of Jazz music and rebetiko or their further development without the existence of neo-Orientalist stereotypes. Finally, we mention the way in which a song could be transcribed from one genre to another with some characteristic examples of classic jazz songs and rebetikos that were transcribed into rebetiko and jazz respectively.
