Female performers and creators in Cretan traditional song
Summary:
This paper deals with the relationship of women with Cretan folk music. Since ancient times, despite the somewhat subordinate status and position of females in Greek society, women have always been actively involved in music. The close relationship between women and music continues to this day, following an evolutionary path. The same is true in Crete where women have participated and performed in the various musical activities of the island since Minoan times. This dissertation attempts to present, through four interviews, the relationship that women have had with Cretan folk music throughout the centuries. The four interviews in question are with women of different ages, who discuss their musical journey, the racial discrimination that may exist in the world of Cretan folk music and music in general, and finally the continuity of Cretan folk music over time, i.e. its preservation, transmission and ultimately, its survival.
