Original Title:
Συγκριτική μελέτη των qəñət στην παραδοσιακή αιθιοπική μουσική και στην ethio-jazz
Translated title:
Comparative study of qəñət in traditional ethiopian music and in ethio-jazz
Summary:
This thesis researches the Ethiopian jazz idiom. Through this research the evidence of the Ethiopian root is being searched, firstly by referring to the history of the country, but also to the musical background of this culture.Particular emphasis is placed on the term qəñət, which is also the basis of the ethiopian tradition. Also important is the name of the musician Mulatu Astatke, who is referred to as the founder of this musical idiom. Therefore, looking for the connection between the two music traditions, a comparative methodology is followed in the form of a case study, where two melodies – a traditional Ethiopian one and a piece by M.Astatke– are analysed with the use of the MIR software, sonic visualiser. The aim of the research is a deeper understanding of this music, both historically and compositionally. Finally, the research includes arrangements of four pieces by M.Astatke, which accompany the presentation of this thesis.
