Factors assosiated with the professional quality of life of pediatric nurses
Summary:
Introduction - Background: The Professional Quality of Life of pediatric nurses is a key
indicator of their professional life, mental and physical health, the quality and safety of
health care, as well as the functioning of healthcare systems. Understanding the factors
related to it plays a crucial role in the design and implementation of effective interventions.
Aim: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the factors related to the
Professional Quality of Life among pediatric nurses.
Methodology: A search was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL
databases during the period of April-May 2024 using specific keywords, with a language
restriction to English and Greek, and including studies published within the last decade
(2014-2024). The inclusion and exclusion criteria specified that the studies had to be primary research, focus on pediatric nurses or pediatric staff with a significant proportion of nurses, and utilize the ProQOL tool in its latest or earlier versions. After applying these criteria, 20 studies were included in the review.
Results: All 20 studies were cross-sectional in design, and the majority reported moderate
levels of Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction. The factors most frequently
studied were gender, age, education level, and work experience. Additional factors examined for their correlation included marital status, work department, shifts, and other demographic and professional characteristics. The conclusions drawn regarding the existence and nature of these correlations are unclear.
Conclusions: Moderate levels of Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction were
reported by most studies, and further research is necessary to draw more reliable conclusions regarding the impact of demographic and professional factors.
