«Συγγένισσες του Χάρου»: Συνεντεύξεις και μελέτη δύο μοιρολογιστρών από το χωριό Τσέρια της Έξω Μάνης
Translated title:
"Kinswomen of Death: Interviews and study of two women mourners from the village of Tseria in Outer Mani"
Summary:
The present study provides an overview of the rituals of death and mourning from a historical, folkloric, and anthropological perspective, aiming for a deeper understanding of the context and manner in which the “moiroloi” (the Greek word for lament singing) is performed. The material provided by the existing bibliographical research on lamentation complements the data revealed by the testimonies of two women lamenters from the village of Tseria in Messinian Mani, which I recorded during my field research. The aim of the present paper is therefore to highlight the key characteristics of lamentation as an organized mournful discourse, performed in circumstances of death and structured by specific customary rules and actions, as well as its value as a mourning ritual in the ‘representations’ of death. In addition, this work aims to shed light on women’s relationship with ritual mourning and the significance of this relationship for the mourners of the village of Tseria in the Messinian (Exo) Mani. Finally, the research also explores the concern for the continuity of the “moiroloi” over time and its value as an asset of the Greek cultural heritage.
