Original Title:
Το θέμα του έρωτα στον Λουκρήτιο και στα ελεγειακά έργα του Οβιδίου, Amores, Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris.
Translated title:
The theme of love in Lucretius and Ovid's elegiac works, Amores, Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris.
Summary:
The present paper deals with the theme of love, as presented by Lucretius and Ovid. The focus of the research is the extent to which Ovid was influenced in the writing of his works, Amores, Ars Amatoria and Remedia Amoris, by Lucretius and his famous treatise against love (DRN 4.1030-1287). Through his elegiac works, Ovid seeks to become a teacher of love, praeceptor amoris. Although Lucretius is not the sole source of inspiration for Ovid's work, through his diatribe against love he laid the foundation for what passionate love looks like. Ovid, therefore, within a context of parody, seeks to examine Lucretius' positions from various angles, to weaken them, and ultimately to usurp the title of the teacher of love from his predecessor. The two poets start from a common starting point but choose to follow different paths, as the aims each pursues through his work, as well as the methods he uses to achieve his goals, are opposite. The aim of the present research is, therefore, to study and analyse the use of these same arguments and ideas, interpreted in a completely different way and serving opposing purposes by two poets who cultivate different literary genres.
