Examining the interplay between the GDPR and NIS 2 Directive in shaping a secure European digital landscape
Summary:
The digital revolution has brought rapid changes, but also significant risks like cyberattacks, data breaches and identity theft, making data protection and cybersecurity critical concerns. In the EU, key regulations like the GDPR and NIS 2 Directive address these issues by requiring organizations to implement technical and organizational safeguards. However, the overlap between these frameworks often creates ambiguities in their application. Therefore, this research explores how GDPR’s data protection principles and rules align with NIS 2’s cybersecurity measures to foster digital security. It also examines challenges, including regulatory limitations, market competition and the difficulties faced by SMEs in achieving compliance. By analyzing these frameworks and identifying areas for improvement, this thesis highlights the importance of adapting regulations to keep pace with evolving threats, ensuring trust, innovation and effective protection of personal data in the digital age.
