Childhood abuse and its effects on adolescence and adulthood
Summary:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of childhood abuse on adolescence and adulthood. Childhood abuse is a public health issue and has been associated with socioeconomic factors such as poverty, unemployment and cultural diversity. The effects it can cause are long-term and impact various aspects of everyday life. Individuals who have experienced childhood abuse may exhibit antisocial and delinquent behavior, eating disorders, self-harm, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and difficulties in academic, social, and interpersonal areas during adolescence. Similarly, in adulthood, they may experience social, economic and occupational difficulties, substance abuse, PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, sleep problems, and a role reversal from victim to perpetrator of abusive behavior. Due to the long-term effects of childhood abuse on the human psyche, therapeutic intervention is deemed highly beneficial. Various psychotherapeutic approaches have been utilized, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, schema therapy, emotion-focused therapy, group therapy, etc. Additionally, considering both the extensive consequences of abuse and the high prevalence of the phenomenon, the development of prevention programs is a responsibility of every modern society. Sexual abuse is the type of abuse with the most extensive research activity, while other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse, despite their severely detrimental effects, similar to those caused by sexual abuse, do not receive the same level of attention from the research community. This is a reality that would be beneficial to change, in order to understand and outline the entirety of the phenomenon of child abuse.
