Comparison of prostheses in otosclerosis surgery - results
Summary:
The aim of this study is to compare the different types of prostheses used in stapedectomy surgery in terms of immediate and long-term audiological outcomes, as well as the potential complications associated with their use. Stapedectomy surgery involves bypassing the immobilized stapes by implanting a prosthetic material between the anvil and an opening created intraoperatively in the ear, usually at the base of the stapes. The first prosthesis used was in 1956 by Shea, which had the shape of the stapes and was made of Teflon. Since then, with the advancement of technology and surgical techniques, various materials (steel, gold, platinum, titanium, and others) have been used to create prostheses each with different configurations and methods of fixation to the anvil. These variations in prosthesis design clearly affect the final audiological result as well as the frequency of postoperative complications, which are the focus of this study.
