Τhe dead mother complex in contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice
Summary:
This thesis explores the Dead Mother Complex in contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice through a comprehensive literature review. It is a qualitative conceptual study based on fundamental works by significant psychoanalytic theorists such as Andre Green, Donald Winnicott, and Christopher Bollas. The study examines the profound impact of a psychically absent mother on the formation of the subject's identity, their interpersonal relationships, and their susceptibility to depressive symptoms. The theoretical part of the paper focuses on reviewing the concept of motherhood through the lens of object relations theory and attachment theory, highlighting the crucial role of early maternal influence in the formation of the infant's psyche. From this perspective, the concept of the dead mother in psychoanalytic thought is explored, along with the concepts of mourning, the dead mother complex, and transference in the analytic setting according to Green.
The second, clinical part of the paper investigates the clinical manifestations of the complex through recent case studies. These clinical studies outline the psychodynamic understanding of the complex through the dynamics of transference and countertransference—concepts that play a central role in the therapeutic process, offering valuable insights into the relational patterns of patients. Simultaneously, a review of different therapeutic approaches applied in the clinical field is provided.
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the advancement of psychodynamic understanding of the dead mother complex and to enhance the outcomes of psychoanalytic work through clinical examples and case studies. Additionally, an effort is made to explore the management of the complex through differentiated therapeutic interventions.
