Original Title:
Η Πυρομαντεία από τους ελληνικούς μαγικούς παπύρους ως τη Melisandre του Game of Thrones
Translated title:
Pyromancy from the Greek magical scrolls to Melisandre of Game of Thrones
Summary:
In this paper, the survival of the model of the witch fortune-teller who uses the element of fire in her art will be studied, with a main focus on the period from the 4th century AD to the present day. Starting from the papyri tradition of lychnomancy - pyromancy, selected extracts from the collection of Greek and demotic magic scrolls (PGM & PDM) will be referred to, focusing on the way in which the practitioners of magic rituals used the element of fire in order to predict the future or to ask for help from a god. It will then explore the continuation of the practice of pyromancy during the early Byzantine centuries through medieval times, reaching as far as the modern American fiction.
