Hospitalization outcome of pediatric patients with covid-19 treated in PICU. A systematic review
Summary:
BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a virus that mainly affected adult patients, while the vast majority of children who became ill had mild symptoms. However, a minority of children, mainly the ones within vulnerable groups or with co-existing health problems, required hospitalization. As pediatric patients, their needs differ from adults, something that needs to be taken into account by medical and nursing staff.

AIM: To investigate the outcome of children hospitalized with COVID-19 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

METHOLOGY: This systematic review was based on the PRISMA checklist.
Comprehensive research of the existing bibliography, using the international online databases PubMed, Scopus and ΙΑΤΡΟΤΕΚ-online, was conducted. It included articles published from 2020 until 2022.

RESULTS: The search identified 399 studies, from which 8 were ultimately included in the systematic review. Of those studies, 3 were conducted in Asia, 3 in America and 2 in Europe. The number of the cases studied was 644 children, of whom 91 died, bringing the mortality rate up to 14.1 %, while the average length of hospitalization in the PICU ranged from 5 to 14 days.

CONCLUSION: The mortality rate highlighted by the studies is encouraging in terms of the outcome of children hospitalized with COVID-19 in PICUs. However, more long-term studies are needed that could also focus on the sequelae of COVID-19 disease.
