Development of a framework for inclusion of patients from remote areas in clinical trials
Summary:
This study addresses the issues of involving patients from remote geographical areas in clinical trials and the barriers. First, the role of clinical trials as the backbone of medical research aimed at improving safety and efficacy of new treatments is analyzed. It is also stressed that participants from different geographic regions should be included with a view to ensuring
representativeness and reducing inequity in health. The possibility of differential response to treatments for various reasons such as environment, social, and economic aspects in patients from different regions advances the case for their inclusion. In spite of the fact that their inclusion is problematic, given the scarce access to health services, and also to trained professionals, the paper tries to indicate solutions with the use of technology, such as telemedicine and professional training in health. In the near future, technological infrastructures will allow easy access of patients to studies with necessary previous professional training for its use. A wide framework is proposed in this paper on integrating patients with the use of technological tools and continuous education for health professionals. Adaptation to local needs and proper resources will determine the success of this framework. Proper implementation of the above improves access and participation of the patients, and thus fairness and equity in health care.
