Summary:
There are many questions and suggestions concerning the literary success of the Harry Potter fantasy series, created by J. K. Rowling; a series that is mostly associated with high sales and, to a certain extent, with the sometimes degrading categorisation as a mere fantasy story.
Apart from the plot, the characters, the ideas and messages in the story, this dissertation aims at drawing attention to one more factor contributing to the series' success: its connection with the theory of archetypes by Joseph Campbell, professor of literature and myth, editor and anthropologist (Walter, 2004, Segal, 2023.) That theory, named The Hero with a Thousand Faces, has been, and still is, highly influential in the world of literature, cinema and the creation of video games.
The aim of this dissertation is to enquire into the extent to which J. K. Rowling followed the theory of archetypes while writing the Harry Potter series.
In parallel, the use of mythological elements will be examined, centred at their archetypal origins, as well as their comparative study, as the appearance of common elements in the myths and traditions of various civilizations around the world has been observed.
Finally, an educational scenario for ages 15-17 will be presented, based on archetypes and the general use of mythology.
