Parenting practices, adjustment and mental health of immigrant and native adolescents during the economic crisis.
Summary:
The present study examined three indicators of school adjustment and three indicators of mental health of adolescents with and without an immigrant background in relation to four parental practices (two for each parent) and two indicators of financial hardship during the period of the economic crisis under the theoretical background of resilience. The key questions are whether economic hardship is a risk factor and whether parenting practices are promotive and/or protective factors for adolescent adjustment and mental health during the economic crisis. The sample consisted of 1252 teenagers from 57 classes attending the 1st grade of Middle Schools in 14 public schools in Attica. (64%) of the participants were immigrants who were mostly second generation (78%). The following tools were used: a) Demographics Questionnaire of gender and immigrant backround, b) the Economic Hardship Questionnaire (Lempers et al., 1989), c) part of the Negative Life Events scale (Fthenakis & , 2002) for unemployment problems, d) the Autonomy Granting Scale questionnaire (Peterson et al., 1985) for the encouragement of autonomy, e) the Care subscale of the Parental Bonding Instrument (Parker et al., 1979), f ) the grades from the school record for school achievement, g) 5 teacher rated questions related to School Engagement and h) 5 teacher rated questions related to non-disruptive behavior in the school context (Motti- Stafanidi & Asendorpf, 2017), i) the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) subscale for Emotional Symptoms (Goodman, 1997), j) the Depression Scale (Salokangas et al., 1995) and k) the Self- Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1065). Family economic hardship and parental unemployment are risk factors for mental health and school performance but not for non- disruptive behavior. Economic hardship is also risk factor for school engagement. When economic hardship and unemployment are high greek students are more affected. Immigrant background is a risk factor for all school adjustment indicators and partly for self-esteem.Parenting practices promote all indicators of school adjustment and mental health. The emotional bond with mother and father is a protective factor for children's self-esteem in conditions of economic hardship. Emotional bond with the mother is also a protective factor against depressive symptoms, and maternal autonomy support protects adolescents’ self- esteem when parents face unemployment problems. Finally, the emotional bond with the father protects the non-disruptive behavior of the adolescents in the school context and the maternal autonomy support protects the self-esteem and the lack of depressive symptoms mainly for the adolescents of Greek origin but not for the adolescents of an immigrant background.
