Influences and representations of contemporary Egyptian musical culture in Greek urban folk song: The case of Nikos Xydakis
Summary:
This thesis examines, through the lens and methodological tools of Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology, the influence of contemporary Egyptian music culture on Greek popular urban song, focusing on the work of composer Nikos Xydakis. Born in Cairo, Xydakis presents himself through a narrative of Greek diaspora, which balances, interacts, and transforms into an ongoing tug-of-war between Greece and Egypt. By exploring the notion of “orientalism” in both the musical and lyrical content of Xydakis, a space of memory, nostalgia, influences, and roots unfolds, in which the composer shapes his hybrid musical identity. Analyzing his artistic career through the framework of Orientalism theory and popular culture, it becomes clear that his work exemplifies a polyphonic and open-minded dialogue between different cultural elements.
