WOMEN'S MIGRATION AND LIVING CONDITIONS IN GREECE: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF WOMEN MIGRANTS FROM SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN COUNTRIES
Summary:
This thesis examines the experiences and challenges of female migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa living in Greece, aiming to highlight the social, economic, and cultural conditions that affect their integration into Greek society. Through the analysis of five research axes—demographic and social characteristics, daily life in the country of origin and host country, future expectations, and memories from the past—the complexity of their experiences is revealed. The research combines qualitative data and bibliographic references to uncover the contradictions arising from the social and economic difficulties they face, as well as the adaptation and resilience strategies they develop for survival and integration into their new society.
The findings of the research demonstrate that migration for these women is often a necessity driven by the desire to improve their living conditions and prospects for themselves and their families. However, the challenges they face in Greece, such as language and cultural barriers, gender discrimination, and limited professional opportunities, hinder their ability to fulfill their expectations. Despite these difficulties, support from community networks and the continuous effort to maintain their cultural identity contribute to their empowerment and the creation of opportunities for social and professional advancement.
The thesis concludes with the need for policies that will support female migration and integration, enhancing equal opportunities, recognition of their qualifications, and strengthening their social position.
